Jimmy Boyd was an American Musician who is best known for his song, “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus“ which instantly became a hit. Boyd started early when it came to music, beginning with learning how to play the guitar at age 4. At age 7, he became familiar with the singing, acting and dancing world as he preformed at school plays, banquets, and local programs. His father, Leslie Boyd, accompanied Boyd who played the guitar and harmonica.

Boyd appeared regularly on Texas Jim Lewis’ radio broadcasts thanks to his older brother, Kenneth, who made him preform one evening. Texas Jim Lewis’ was immediately drawn to Boyd, which eventually lead to him preforming with him every year. Boyd appeared on the The Frank Sinatra Show shortly after winning a talent contest. Boyd signed a recording contract with Columbia Records shortly after appearing on the show which lead him into greater success.
“I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” was Boyd‘s top hit which he wrote when he was only 13, back in 1952. Boyd was presented with two gold records. Shortly after, according to Los Angeles Times, the Catholic Church criticized this song for implying a link between sex and the religious holiday, causing several radio stations in markets to ban it. The ban was lifted after 13 year old Jimmy Boyd discussed with church leaders the actual meaning to his song. As amazing as it is, “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” is still a hit every year around Christmas time and continues to sell.
Boyd‘s career began to face in the late 60’s, but he remained hardworking as an actor. Boyd retired in California and enjoyed sailing and fishing up until he got cancer at the age of 70. Boyd died of cancer on March 7, 2009 in Santa Monica CA.
